„You are my Sunshine“ wurde erstmals 1939 aufgenommen, als Komponisten und Texter werden der Countrysänger Jimmie Davis und Charles Mitchell geführt. Prof. Mitsui von der Kanazawa-Universität (Japan) hat als als Urheber Oliver Hood ausgemacht (Für Quellenstudien: http://www.rosemontrecords.com/historical.html).
Es wurden zwei Versionen von „You Are My Sunshine“ augenommen, die erste von den PINE RICH BOYS am 22. August 1939, die zweite wurde am 13. September von der RICE BROTHERS GANG aufgenommen. Die Version von Jimmie Davis wurde am 5. Februar 1940 eingespielt, Jimmie Davies soll an Paul Rice 35 Dollar für die Rechte an dem Song gezahlt haben.
In der Folgezeit gab es kaum einen Musiker, der den Song nicht aufgenommen hat: Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, Bill Haley,Trini Lopez, Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin usw.
Ray Charles Version war die erfolgreichste, er erreichte damit Platz 7 in den Billboard Top 100.
Es soll der drittbekanntste Song hinter „Happy Birthday“ und „White Christmas“ sein.
In Deutschland wurde der Song 2000 durch den Film „Oh Brother, Were Art Thou“ mit Georg Cloony wieder aktuell.
